The Digest 🗞️😀
Winter’s icy grip isn’t letting go just yet – the amber cold weather alert for the South East has been extended until 9:00 AM on Tuesday: The agency warns of "significant impacts" on health and social care, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. With snow, ice, and freezing temperatures causing disruption across the region, including school closures and treacherous roads, now’s the time to check in on neighbours and loved ones who might need extra support. Stay safe, Surrey! ❄️🧣
Plans for the 2025 summer concert on D’Oyly Carte Island have been scrapped after councillors raised health and safety concerns: The private island, nestled in the Thames, hosted a successful weekend of music as part of the Weybridge Festival in 2024, with no incidents and plenty of praise. However, Surrey Police and environmental health officials highlighted gaps in safety planning, including risks of falls into the river and doubts about the bridge’s capacity to handle crowds. Organiser Andy Hill expressed disappointment, citing the significant £35,000 investment in safety measures last year. Looks like Weybridge’s slice of history will stay a little quieter this summer. 🎤🚧
McDonald’s has been given the green light to open a new restaurant in Quadrant House, Croydon Road, Caterham – but not without strings attached: Tandridge District Council approved the plans with conditions aimed at addressing local concerns, including a 10 pm curfew for delivery drivers and CCTV installation to deter anti-social behaviour. While some residents worry about long-term impacts, others welcome the investment and the promise of 120 new jobs. Councillor Jenny Gaffney, who opposed the scheme, called it a “divisive issue” but acknowledged efforts to address community concerns. It seems Caterham’s golden arches will come with plenty of scrutiny. 🍟🏗️
