🌳 Reigates Very Own Catacombs! | 11th September

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Surrey. Simon here! This is Inspired Surrey, the local newsletter that's more fun than a game of Snake on your old Nokia.

In today’s Inspired Surrey:

  • Rare Reigate caves open day on Saturday 🔦

  • Emergency Services Day at Brooklands 🚨

  • Huge craft fair this week 🧵

Let’s get to it!

Explore the Hidden Caves Beneath Reigate! 🕳️

I’m going to be completely honest, I had no idea there were caves underneath Reigate, it’s like something from the Paris catacombs.

The Reigate Caves Open Day is a rare chance to step beneath the streets of Reigate and have a poke about the fascinating tunnels and chambers that have been hidden from view for centuries.

The caves aren’t openly available, open day’s come around every few months, so this is a great chance to visit.

There’s 2 different caves to see:

  • Barons' Cave – Under Reigate Castle, these caves date back to the medieval period. You’ll get to explore this ancient site, learning about its role in Reigate’s history.

  • Tunnel Road Caves – Built in the 19th century, these hand-carved sandstone caves were once used for storage and air-raid shelters during the war.

👉 Location: Barons' Cave (Castle Grounds) & Tunnel Road West Caves, Reigate

The Digest 🗞️😀

More road closures near Guildford, Heathrow, and Wisley this week: Keep an eye on the roads, there will be overnight closures on the A3 and M25, starting as early as 9pm. So, if you're driving around Guildford, Heathrow, or Wisley after dark, prepare for some detours. If you’re planning on driving, make sure you check the routes before setting off. Sat navs aren’t always the best for avoiding roadworks, so give yourself a bit of extra time - especially if you’re heading to Heathrow. For more information and specific closures, learn more here.

If you live in Guildford, you know flooding can sneak up fast, especially around the River Wey. To help locals stay flood-ready, a drop-in event will be held at Guildford Cricket Club’s pavilion today (the 11th), from 11am to 3pm. The event, hosted by the Environment Agency, aims to provide advice on both personal and community flood resilience. Experts from Surrey County Council, Guildford Borough Council, and the South East Rivers Trust will also be present to share tips and showcase online tools to help you prepare for potential flooding.

Well-wishers are raising a glass to Farnham’s New Dawn Pubs as they set off on an epic 65-mile trek from London to Brighton in support of two fantastic charities. The pub group will begin the three-day walk on Thursday, September 12, starting at Westminster Bridge and finishing at Brighton Pier. Their mission? To raise £25,000 for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care and Abby’s Heroes Children’s Cancer Charity. What’s even better is every penny raised will go directly to these causes, with the participating companies covering all their own costs! Cheers to that! 🍻 If you’d like to donate, you can do so here.
