🌳 Farnham Farmers' Market, Ripley Bonfire & Queen by Candlelight! | 25th October

Good morning, Surrey. Simon here! This is Inspired Surrey - the newsletter where you’ll never see political ads. We can’t stand them either.

In today’s Inspired Surrey:

  • Newsletter favourite farmers’ market in town this weekend 🧀

  • It’s bonfire season, and Ripley is raring to go 🔥

  • Queen by candlelight, yes please 🕯️

  • What’s on this weekend 📅

Let’s get to it.

The Newsletter Favourite Farnham Farmers' Market Is Back This Sunday! 🍰🧀

It’s one of my favourites, and I know it’s one of yours, and it’s back this Sunday!

Munch your way through the best local goodies Surrey has to offer! Swing by the Farnham Farmers’ Market this Sunday from 10 am to 1:30 pm.

📅 When: Sunday, October 27th, 10 am - 1:30 pm
🚶 Where: Central Car Park, off Victoria Road, Farnham, GU9 7RD

What we’ve got to look forward to!

  • Fresh fruit and veggies (straight from the farm)

  • Local honey, jams, and all things sweet 🍯

  • Delicious bread, cakes, and baked delights

  • Meat, fish, and even game for the carnivores

  • Unique pickles, sauces, and the perfect cheese to pair with your next picnic 🧀

  • Handmade rum, gin, and wine — because why not? 🍷🍸

With 38-46 stalls each month, it’s always guaranteed to be an excellent Sunday morning!

While you’re there, pop over to the charity tea tent for a hot cuppa and a slice of cake. Each month, a different local charity takes over, so every sip (and bite) supports a great cause. 🍰❤️

The Ripley Bonfire is back on Saturday, October 26th, and it’s going to be an unforgettable night of fire, fun, and fireworks!

Ripley bonfire is one of the most popular events in the South East, drawing up to 12,000 visitors, its absolutely massive! If you’ve never been, this is your chance to see what all the fuss is about, the bonfire is usually huge!

Parking is always tricky, so travel in groups if possible or consider public transport.

📅 When: Saturday, October 26th
🚶 Where: Ripley Green, Ripley

The event features live music, an extensive funfair with rides, games, and activities for all ages. And of course, there’ll be plenty of food stalls serving up average burgers and questionable hot dogs, but that’s all part of the fun!

Along with a bar offering the perfect spot to sip your drink while enjoying the fireworks!

The Ripley Bonfire isn’t just about fun; it’s about community. Proceeds go to the Ripley Over 60s Club and other local charities, so every ticket, snack, and drink you buy helps support a great cause.

Where Were We Wednesday! 📸

How did you get on? It’s quite recognisable!

If you didn’t get it, we were at The Coach House in Gomshall, near Guildford.

It’s a furniture shop, but one of the best furniture shops I’ve ever been too! The sculptures are fantastic, definitely worth taking a look at if you’re in the local are - check it out here!

The Digest 🗞️😀

Exciting times ahead for Great and Little Bookham and Dorking as Mole Valley District Council unveils new masterplans to revamp the community hubs: From sprucing up streets and public spaces to promoting walking, cycling, and breathing new life into vacant buildings, it’s all about making these towns more vibrant and pedestrian-friendly. Want to know more? Drop by the public consultation events this Thursday from 4 pm to 7:30 pm at St Nicholas Church in Great Bookham or the MVDC offices in Dorking, or click here to submit comments. It’s still early days — no funding has been secured yet, but the council wants to hear what you think before the plans head back to the drawing board in early 2025. 🗣️📋

After years of stop-start chaos thanks to a level crossing that shuts eight times an hour, Ash villagers are finally getting a breather: The long-awaited £19m Ash Road bridge is set to open on Saturday, November 23, 2024. This new route should help ease the notorious bottleneck that’s turned the village into a rat run for drivers between Guildford and Aldershot. But if you’re in an HGV, you’ll still have to take the long way around! The bridge, named Chester Bridge after a community-led competition with over 400 entries, will fully connect by February, though pedestrians and cyclists can still use the old level crossing to get around. 🚶🚴

An empty office block in Sunbury could soon get a fresh start as a new home for Great Oaks College, helping meet the growing demand for special educational needs (SEND) places: Formerly housing a data solutions company, Windmill House is set to transform into a secure, supportive educational facility for students aged 19 to 25 with a range of complex needs. The new campus, planned to open by September 2025, will build on the college’s stellar reputation by offering tailored programmes that help students with PMLD and autism spectrum disorder thrive as adults. The proposed design includes four specialized wings for everything from vocational skills to sensory engagement, plus plans to improve accessibility and security. With the planning application already in, it’s fingers crossed for a smooth approval! 🌱🧩
