Get Your Gatsby On! A Night of Jazz, Glitz, and Glamour at Guildford Cathedral 🥂🎷

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, now’s your chance. On Saturday 8th November, Guildford Cathedral is hosting a show-stopping Great Gatsby Ball, and it’s shaping up to be the most glamorous night in Surrey this autumn.

Think live swing bands, dazzling cabaret performers, pearls, feathers, and flapper dresses galore — all set against the jaw-dropping backdrop of one of Surrey’s most iconic buildings. It’s vintage escapism at its finest, complete with music, dancing, and more sparkle than you can shake a champagne flute at.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has opened applications to recruit the next generation of firefighters, and they’re after people with stamina, smarts, and a passion for helping others. It’s not just about battling blazes; firefighters also carry out community safety work, school visits, and home checks. Training kicks off next spring at Wray Park in Reigate, but you'll need to apply by 9th November and pass a five-step process first. 🔥👨‍🚒

It’s been six years since the Tumbling Bay Weir Bridge in Guildford collapsed during a flood, and while the National Trust has finally pencilled in summer 2026 for its replacement, there’s a catch, the work depends entirely on the weather. With only a three-month low-water window to get it done, any hiccups could push the date back again. For now, the detour remains, but hope is finally on the horizon for reconnecting this historic route. 🌧️🚧

More than 80 Warm Welcome venues have reopened across Surrey, offering free hot drinks and a cosy place to chat throughout the colder months. From libraries and community centres to church halls, these spaces are part of a Surrey County Council initiative to support anyone feeling the pinch from the cost of living crisis. Wednesday - Bonfire Night
16° 🌡️ 13° | 🌦️ | Mid-week remains on the grey side, cloudy, still breezy, with a chance of a shower in the afternoon. Expect highs around 16°C, lows around 13°C. I know a lot of us might be about enjoying fireworks, take a coat and hopefully the rain doesn’t spoil it!

15° 🌡️ 9° | 🌤️ | A bit of a brighter day! Partly sunny, and with the wind easing, it’ll feel nicer. Highs around 15°C, overnight down to about 9°C. A great day for a stroll around the town without feeling soggy.

14° 🌡️ 10° | 🌧️ | Wrapping the week with the potential for a few morning showers, then mostly cloudy afterwards. Highs near 14°C, lows around 10°C. Not a wash-out, but umbrella handy for sure.
