🎉 One Year, 657,980 Meals: FareShare Surrey’s Guildford Hub Turns One!

FareShare Sussex & Surrey is celebrating a milestone moment, one year since opening its Guildford warehouse, which has already rescued and redistributed over 276 tonnes of surplus food.

That’s the equivalent of nearly 658,000 meals for people across Surrey, with more than half of that being fresh fruit, veg, and dairy that would have otherwise gone to waste.

The operation now supports 38 charities and community groups weekly, up from just 17 a year ago, thanks to the incredible work of 111 volunteers and a whole lot of love and logistics.

Other significant milestones include partnering with Rosamund Community Garden to transform small amounts of waste food into compost for their community allotment. Volunteer Coordinator, Gemma, will be taking a group of volunteers up to the site for afternoon tea as part of Volunteer Week celebrations.

As the demand for food continues to remain high we are aiming to supply 20 additional charities and community groups over the next year. This would nearly quadruple the number in two years making a huge social and environmental impact.” Chief Executive, Dan Slatter.

The charity is calling on food hubs across Surrey to get in touch, including religious spaces offering food support, community fridges, community cafes, hospices, schools, etc that may benefit from their surplus food. Food businesses looking to donate can contact FareShare Sussex & Surrey by emailing [email protected] or calling food supply manager George Shaw directly on 07546 70421.

It’s a shining example of what can happen when communities come together to fight food waste and food insecurity. 🍎🚛

The Digest 🗞️😀

After 28 years together, Margaret Green (78) and Tony Howard (82) finally said "I do"—not in a chapel, but in the Albury Ward at Royal Surrey County Hospital: The long-time couple, who met in Elstead and moved in together in the late '90s after both losing their first spouses just weeks apart, decided not to wait any longer after Tony was admitted with a broken leg and other health complications. Surrounded by family, with decorations, tea, and sandwiches lovingly arranged by staff, the couple tied the knot in a heartfelt ceremony made possible by a special licence. Proof that love really can bloom anywhere. 💒💐

Walton-on-Thames Bowling Club, a fixture of the community since 1921, could soon be bowled over by plans for a brand-new NHS health hub: Elmbridge Borough Council has granted the NHS the right to buy part of Elm Grove recreation ground, where the beloved club currently sits. While councillors are calling it a “once in a generation opportunity” for local healthcare, members of the historic club fear it could mark the end of their century-long legacy. Talks are ongoing to find a new home for the bowlers, but so far, there’s no green in sight. 🏥🎳

Surrey County Council has unveiled plans to develop four council-owned sites into much-needed housing, including homes specially designed to support people with mental health needs: The proposed developments in Merstham, Great Bookham, Cranleigh, and Staines could deliver around 100 homes in total, with a mix of general housing and self-contained supported living apartments. Councillor Sinead Mooney called the initiative “not just about building homes, it’s about building futures,” highlighting the urgent need for safe, sustainable accommodation to help vulnerable residents live independently. 🏡💚
