🌳 Rev. Richard Coles, Cobham Mill Open Day & What's On This Weekend! | 9th May

Good morning, Surrey. Simon here! This is Inspired Surrey.

It’s hard to believe we’re over a week into May — one minute it’s Easter eggs, the next it’s pub garden weather (well… almost).

If you’re feeling like the year’s flying by, you’re not alone. But there’s plenty happening close to home to slow things down a bit — markets, live music and local events.

So grab a cuppa, find five quiet minutes, and let’s take a look at what’s going on in and around Surrey this week.

In today’s Inspired Surrey:

  • Rev. Richard Coles coming to Guildford 🎤

  • Cobham Mill open day 🌾

  • What’s on Guide for this weekend 📅

Let’s get to it.

🎤 Rev. Richard Coles Live in Guildford!

🗓 Saturday 31st May | 🕢 7:30pm | 📍 G Live | 🎟 From £32.50

From pop stardom with The Communards to the pulpit, the dancefloor of Strictly, the jungle of I’m A Celeb, and the pages of Sunday Times bestsellers… is there anything Reverend Richard Coles hasn’t done?

Now he’s heading to G Live in Guildford with his one-man show: “Borderline National Trinket” – a hilarious, heartwarming evening of stories, secrets, and slightly scandalous anecdotes from his wonderfully unexpected life.

Here’s what to expect:

  • 🤔 Musings, Mischief & Ministry – From 80s synth-pop to life as Britain’s most recognisable vicar.

  • 📚 Behind the Book – Hear about his brand-new novel A Death On Location (and yes, it's as fun as it sounds).

  • 🍿 Jungle Gossip – Curious what really goes on behind the I'm A Celeb cameras? Now’s your chance to ask.

  • 🗣️ Q&A Session – Bring your burning questions (polite or cheeky – both welcome).

It’s the kind of evening that feels like catching up with your most charming, opinionated, unexpectedly famous uncle. One who can dance a cha-cha and deliver a sermon in the same breath.

👀 Seats are going fast – last year’s shows sold out, so don’t sleep on this one!

📍 G Live Main Auditorium
🎫 Tickets from £32.50 (plus booking fee)
🔞 Ages 16+ only

🌾 This Sunday: Cobham Mill Open Day!

🗓 Sunday 11th May | 🕑 2–5pm | 📍 Cobham Mill | 🎟 FREE

Fancy a charming riverside escape with a splash of local history (and maybe a slice of cake or two)? This Sunday, Cobham Mill—Surrey’s only working watermill—throws open its doors for one of its much-loved monthly open days.

Tucked away on the banks of the River Mole, this beautifully restored 19th-century mill is a hidden gem where history quite literally comes to life. The wheel turns, the gears grind, and you’ll get to see local wheat transformed into flour just as it was done over a century ago. It’s like stepping into a period drama—just with more tea and fewer corsets.

Whether you're into heritage, engineering, or just looking for a wholesome Sunday afternoon outing, Cobham Mill ticks all the boxes. And yes, there will be cake.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • 🌀 See the Watermill in Action – Watch as local wheat is ground into flour the old-fashioned way. It's oddly satisfying.

  • 🧠 Meet the Millers – Friendly guides will be on hand to explain how the mill works (and probably tell you a few fun facts you didn’t know you needed).

  • 🍰 Tea & Cake Heaven – Grab a cuppa, nab a slice of something sweet, and chill by the River Mole.

  • 🐶 Dog & Kid Friendly – Bring the whole crew! Four-legged friends and tiny humans are all welcome.

📅 Pop it in your calendar – It’s only open on the second Sunday of the month from April to October, so don’t miss this one!

PS: It’s completely FREE. Your wallet will thank you.

The Digest 🗞️😀

Across Surrey and the South East, communities have come together to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day — the momentous day in 1945 that marked the end of World War Two in Europe. Ceremonies, silences, and beacon lightings have taken place in towns and villages, with veterans and evacuees sharing vivid memories of joy, chaos, and community spirit. In Epsom, 89-year-old Keith Ovens recalled dancing in the streets, while Sylvia Holder from Hove remembered the “totally manic” celebrations as a six-year-old. It was a day of reflection, resilience, and remembering those who gave everything. 🇬🇧🔥

The University of Surrey is swinging big with plans to build the largest padel facility in the county! If approved, the new complex at Surrey Sports Park will feature 10 covered courts (including a swanky show court for top-level tournaments), a clubhouse, café, bar, and all the good vibes. The uni has teamed up with PadelStars to make this the ultimate padel destination for both students and the wider community. If you’ve never played padel before, imagine tennis meets squash with a dash of social energy – and now it’s on track to become Guildford’s next big sporting obsession by 2026. 🏟️💫

Surrey’s looking greener by the day, with over 768,000 trees now planted as part of the county’s bold plan to put a sapling in the ground for every single resident by 2030. From school eco-councils in Waverley to space lab staff in Dorking (yes, really!), community groups have been digging in – quite literally – to help reach the 1.2 million tree target. With orchards popping up in GP surgeries and reflection areas blooming in schoolyards, it’s a growing reminder that local action really can shape a more resilient, leafy future. 🌱🌍
