🌳 Rude Science, Guildford Flea Market, What's On & The Wordle | 27th October

Good morning, Surrey! Simon here. This is Inspired Surrey. The average Brit eats over 23 kilos of sweets a year. Most of it is consumed around Halloween, so if you’re behind, you better get unwrapping.

In today’s Inspired Surrey:

  • Rude Science at G Live 🤢

  • Fantastic Guildford Flea Market 🛍

  • The World-Famous Monday Wordle 🧠

  • What’s on Guide for this week 📅

Let’s get to it.

Rude, Revolting, and Ridiculously Fun – Rude Science Hits G Live! 🤢🧪

Looking for a half-term treat that’s equal parts educational and utterly outrageous? Mark your diaries for Thursday 30th October, because BBC’s Stefan Gates is bringing his explosive, gross-out science show Rude Science to G Live Guildford, and it’s guaranteed to be a blast (sometimes literally).

Expect flying whoopee cushions, fart machines, pee-powered fireworks, snot cocktails (yep, you read that right), and a very large fake bottom or two.

It’s a brilliantly bonkers show that sneaks real science into a laugh-out-loud riot of high-energy stunts, perfect for curious kids (and big kids too).

🎟️ Tickets: £18–£20 (plus transaction fee)
📅 Date: Thursday 30th October 2025 (11:30am and 3:00pm)
📍 Location: G Live, Guildford – Main Auditorium
👨‍🔬 Age: Great for ages 6+ (but grown-ups will love it too!)
🔗 More info & tickets here

If your little ones love explosions, poo jokes, and weird science facts, this is the show for them. Think Horrible Histories, but with more bodily functions and Bunsen burners. Science has never been this gloriously disgusting! 🤓💨

🧁 Sweet treats & festive bakes
🪞 Vintage homewares & quirky gifts

Whether you’re looking for something special and sustainable, or just love a good festive browse, there’s truly something for everyone.

Plus, with the stunning backdrop of Guildford Cathedral, the setting couldn’t be more perfect for getting into that cosy, Christmassy mood.

The Digest 🗞️😀

Every year, sci-fi fans descend on Horsell Common in Woking, hoping to find the exact sandy spot where Martians first landed in The War of the Worlds. The iconic 1898 novel by HG Wells put this quiet Surrey patch on the intergalactic map — but over a century (and quite a few trees) later, it’s easy to walk right past the site without realising. Luckily, Professor Peter Beck has revealed how to pinpoint the real location using historic maps. So yes, Surrey has a literal alien landing zone… you just need to know where to look! 🛸🌲

A nine-day rail closure is now underway, affecting routes between Staines and Windsor and Guildford to Havant until 2nd November. It’s all part of the final phase of long-term upgrades to the Portsmouth Direct Line, including major resignalling and level crossing improvements. Replacement buses are running, but it’s worth double-checking those journey plans. Network Rail says doing the work over half-term helps reduce disruption. 🚌🛤️

A petition with nearly 700 signatures is calling for Surrey County Council to scrap its new booking system for Camberley and Lyne recycling centres, which requires residents to book a slot online before dumping their rubbish. The trial, running until 10th November, was introduced to reduce congestion — but some locals and councillors say it’s confusing, unnecessary, and just adds hassle for people trying to do the right thing. The council says they’ll review it at the end of the trial, but for now, it’s click-before-you-tip. 🧾🚮
