Mysterious Caves Beneath Surrey? Sinkhole Sparks Underground Questions 🕳️

A giant sinkhole recently opened up in Godstone, causing homes to be evacuated and leaving residents shaken. But beyond the immediate disruption, the collapse has reignited a long-standing mystery—could forgotten underground caves and quarries be lurking beneath the surface, just waiting to make themselves known?

Experts believe it’s possible.

Peter Burgess from the Wealden Cave and Mining Society has been studying these long-abandoned tunnels, once used to mine silver sand for glassmaking and gardening.

But here’s the problem: these caves were never properly mapped, meaning no one knows exactly where they all are.

Some entrances can be spotted on old maps, but many have simply been lost to time—until, of course, the ground suddenly gives way.

So, just how many caves are hidden under Godstone? That’s anyone’s guess. Many have collapsed, been filled in, or remain completely undiscovered. Unlike the well-documented Reigate Caves, which are open for public tours, Godstone’s underground labyrinth remains a mystery.

Could these hidden tunnels have caused the sinkhole? It’s possible, but geologists and engineers will have the final say. What’s certain is that this ancient underground network is a lot closer to the surface than many people realized—and who knows when (or where) it might make another surprise appearance?

Cranleigh Amateur Swimming Club is treading water—and not in a good way: Since January, the club has been unable to train at Cranleigh Leisure Centre due to faulty ceiling tiles, and with no clear communication from the council, frustration is mounting. Club chair Andrew Stewart warns that without the income from their postponed March gala (which was expected to bring in £12,500), the club’s future is at risk. Add to that soaring leisure centre fees, and things are looking tough for swimmers and parents alike. The pool is set to reopen in April, but with rising costs and uncertainty over support, will the club still be afloat by then? 🌊🤷‍♂️

Surrey County Council is considering installing barriers at both ends of Staines High Street to restrict vehicle access during peak shopping hours: If approved, the barriers would be locked from 09:30 to 17:30, Monday to Saturday, and all day Sunday, allowing only emergency services and market traders through. Delivery vehicles would still have access outside these hours, but regular motorists would need to find alternative routes. The plan aims to make the high street safer and more pedestrian-friendly, but not everyone is on board—locals have until 7th April to have their say. 🏙️🚦

Construction is officially underway on 26 new affordable homes in Chiddingfold, as Waverley Borough Council replaces 10 outdated properties and 40 under-used garages with modern, sustainable housing: The development, which includes a mix of flats and houses for social rent, affordable rent, and shared ownership, aims to help local families stay in the community they grew up in. With designs focused on reducing carbon emissions and energy costs, the project is being hailed as a much-needed investment in local housing. Councillor Penny Rivers joined developers to mark the start of the build, calling it a step towards stronger, more resilient communities. 🏠🌿
