🌳 The Big Farnham Switch-On, NCT Sale & The Amazing Vivace Chorus! | 13th November

Good morning, Surrey. Simon here! This is Inspired Surrey, and happy World Kindness Day! Every day should be World Kindness Day. 😊

In today’s Inspired Surrey:

  • Farnham Christmas lights switch on (it’s not too early!) 🎄

  • NCT nearly new sale 🛍️

  • Vivace chorus and brass band at G Live 🎷

  • Where are we Wednesday 👏

Let’s get to it.

Farnham Christmas Lights Switch-On 🎄🎅

It’s that time of year again! And I did ask you guys if it was too early for Christmas information, and it was met with a resounding no!

Farnham Town Council is bringing the holiday sparkle to Gostrey Meadow with the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On - and you won’t want to miss this festive favourite!

📍 Where: Gostrey Meadow
📅 When: Saturday, 16 November
⏰ Time: Starts at 1pm, lights switch on at 4:30pm

What else will be there..

  • Live Entertainment 🎶: All afternoon, enjoy performances by local schools, theatre groups, dance companies, and bands. They’ll be serving up a mix of traditional carols, cheerful Christmas tunes, and dance routines to keep you feeling festive.

  • The Big Moment 🌟: At 4:30pm, the lights go on! Gather ‘round for the countdown as Gostrey Meadow transforms into a sparkling winter wonderland.

  • Perfect for All Ages 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦: Whether you’re bringing the kids, your mates, or just coming solo to soak in the holiday magic, there’s something for everyone!

Bring your cosiest scarf, your holiday cheer, and maybe a thermos of hot chocolate (or something a little stronger!).

There’s nothing quite like that first switch-on moment of the season.. and we’re only 42 days away from Christmas Day, which is terrifying!

A battle is brewing over Guildford’s rejected £6m active travel scheme, which aimed to improve walking and cycling routes along London Road from the A3: Initially greenlit by transport officials, the project was blocked by Surrey County Council’s cabinet, citing safety concerns for pedestrians, particularly those with disabilities. However, the decision has now been challenged by Deputy Chair Lance Spencer, who argues that the cabinet failed to consider the broader benefits, like reducing traffic and hitting net zero targets, and risks losing the project’s funding from Active Travel England. The select committee is set to scrutinize the evidence, including feedback from disabled advocacy groups and traffic experts, on Tuesday. Will Guildford’s cycleways see the light of day? Time—and the select committee—will tell! 🚴‍♂️👟

More Guildford news.. Thames Water’s massive £46m pipeline project, designed to bolster the water supply for Guildford and beyond, has just passed a major milestone, over 5.8 km of the pipeline is now in place: This ambitious 9km water transfer pipeline will link west Guildford’s supply to the east, serving 9,000 homes in Cranleigh and surrounding villages, aiming to prevent future outages like last year’s dry spell. The next phase includes work on Pewley Hill and Pewley Downs, though the walking paths will stay open. A quick heads-up: Guildford Lane will be closed for two weeks for pipework, with diversions in place. Set for completion by winter 2025, this project will eventually pump up to 14 megalitres of water a day - that’s nearly six Olympic swimming pools! 💧🔧
