The Digest 🗞️😀

Batten down the hatches, Storm Darragh is on its way, bringing strong winds and a yellow weather warning across the South East this weekend: From Friday afternoon (3 PM) to the early hours of Sunday (6 AM), expect travel delays on roads, rails, and in the skies. The Met Office also warns of potential damage from flying debris, so secure those garden chairs and bins! Let’s hope it’s not a repeat of Storm Bert’s antics last month. 🌧️🌬️

The Wildlife Aid Foundation (WAF) in Leatherhead is urging the public to think twice before turning to the internet for advice on caring for orphaned baby animals: This comes after they rescued two tiny mice that had been fed an unsuitable mix of mayonnaise and corn syrup, leaving them underweight, dehydrated, and in poor condition. While one mouse tragically didn’t survive, the other, nicknamed Syrup, made a full recovery and has since been released into a volunteer's garden. WAF reminds everyone that good intentions aren’t always enough—always contact a wildlife centre for advice if you find an orphaned animal. Let’s leave the mayo for sandwiches! 🌿🐾

Spelthorne Borough Council’s financial woes remain under the spotlight as a government review into its staggering £1.1 billion debt has been extended until January 31, 2025: Concerns about governance, audit strength, and risk management have kept the council, which has the second-highest debt among boroughs after Woking, under scrutiny. Spelthorne’s borrowing spree aimed to fund regeneration projects and maintain services, but mounting risks, including tenant losses and asset devaluation, have cast doubt on the strategy's long-term sustainability. As residents wait for clarity, the council faces increasing pressure to prove it can weather the financial storm. 🌧️📉
